Casey Jones

from Grapevine by Andrew Calhoun

/

about

John Luther Jones, born 1863, was from Cayce, KY; he was the only fatality of a train wreck on April 30, 1900. The "Casey Jones" song was first created by Canton, MS, engine-wiper Wallace Saunders, then made over by vaudeville songwriters in "the first comedy song about a train wreck" into a droll slander on Jones and his wife. I took the tune from Sandburg and retold the story from various versions in keeping with the historical record.
